Safety Committees

EHS works closely with several university committees that help implement the EHS mission. These committees include:

Emergency Management Executive Committee (EMEC)
The Emergency Management Executive Committee (EMEC) at George Mason University is responsible for setting policy, as well as providing broad oversight of emergency management activities. This approach will foster a cohesive approach to the management and coordination of emergency management efforts for all hazards that can be reasonably expected to impact George Mason University operations. The activities of the EMEC are those appropriate to accomplish its emergency management role at George Mason University to prepare the university to address emergency situations when needed and to coordinate units to participate in emergency preparedness and response activities as appropriate.
Institutional Biosafety Committee

The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is an advisory committee at George Mason University (Mason) dedicated to excellence in the science and practice of biological safety. Committee members are involved in understanding, evaluating, and controlling the potential risks from recombinant DNA, biohazardous materials, and biologically-derived toxins. The activities of the IBC are those appropriate to accomplish its role in advising the Office of Laboratory Safety (OLS) and the Vice President for Research and Economic Development with regards to the acquisition, storage, use, and disposal of recombinant DNA, biohazardous materials, and biologically-derived toxins at Mason, and in monitoring and recommending as necessary, modifications to Mason's Biosafety Program.

The IBC meets on the first Friday of each month. These meetings are open to the public. For more information on meeting dates and times, email Sarah McAbee, Biological Safety Officer, at sgillett@gmu.edu.

Radiation Safety Committee

The Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) oversees administration of the Radiation Safety Program at George Mason University. The RSC reviews all users and uses of radioactive materials and x-ray producing devices to ensure that all operations involving sources of ionizing radiation are conducted in a safe manner. Additionally, the RSC periodically reviews the radiation safety program to ensure that exposure to radiation is maintained As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) and that operations at Mason are in compliance with applicable government regulations and the condition of Mason's radioactive materials licenses with the NRC and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
